SPURS TALISMAN
WE'VE USED UP OUR FREEBIES
Ronny Talisman, 6 Feb 2009
With only a third of the league programme to go, we are now getting
down to the business end of things.
Every game is now vital, and when you look at our fixtures for April with Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal, we really can't afford any further slip ups.
Every team has wobbles in the course of the season, but I really feel that we have used up all
our freebies - having tossed away cheap points against Stoke, Wolves and
Hull at home and Everton and Birmingham away.
Column Continues Below...
That lot amounts to no less than 12 points dropped. Even if you allow for half of them, the extra 6
points would place us on 48 points (1 behind Arsenal and with a
similar goal difference), no less than 8 points ahead of Villa (who
would have one game in hand) and 7 points ahead of Liverpool.
This would have given us the cushion which I always felt we would need
going into April.
However, it was not to be, and I really think it's going to be very tough now for us to finish in the coveted fourth spot. When all is said and done, you have to fancy Man City or
Liverpool if they get a run of form together.
There's no doubt that Harry's squad is going to be tested to the full. We're also going to
have to rely on some of the other teams wasting a few of their
freebies.
As Greavsie used to say, "Football is a funny old thing" and
I have no doubt there will be a few more twists and turns along the
way before we reach the finishing line.
Let's hope that they fall in
our favour.
Every injury, every red card will have more significance.
Just look at Defoe's red at Pompey ruling him out of vital games when
he was on fire or Lennon's groin strain when he was terrorising
defenders. Let it happen to somebody else this time. COYS
Sean, February 6, 2010 at 2:18 pm What always amuses me about these articles (and threads on fan forums) is they always take into account the difficult games \'your\' team has, but not the difficult games \'your\' rivals have.
Yes, Citeh are favourites, but they have to play four of the \'Big 4\', Spurs have to play three - Chelsea and Arsenal at WHL (and derby games). Of close rivals Spurs have Villa and Everton (both at WHL - Everton at the end od a very tough run of games for the Mersysiders), and, you guessed it - Citeh. It is far too tight to call, and who is to say that if it comes down to that match at Eastlands, the whole thing doesn\'t come down to Spurs winning and gaining 4th spot (or even 3rd if Arsenal implode) due to a lucky deflection, or a Citeh player getting sent off - as Greavsie said: \"It\'s a funny old GAME\" ;-/
