Mauricio Pochettino was named to manage Tottenham Hotspur as the successor to Tim Sherwood. Pochettino signed a five-year contract in the early part of the summer, with a number of candidates linked to the position, including Frank de Boer.

De Boer has revealed that he was very close to moving from Ajax in Holland to Tottenham, but the club finally chose Pochettino.

The manager of Ajax, who is just 44 years of age, said he was close to taking over at White Hart Lane, before the club opted to go with the ex-boss at Southampton as their new manager.

De Boer said choosing a new manager for a club is similar to the corporate world. The board votes and in this case they opted for Pochettino. However, De Boer said he likely would have said yes, if the club at approached him.

Tottenham has denied they approached De Boer, but the manager at Ajax insisted he was one of the managers in line for the position before the board gave the job to the Argentine Pochettino.

De Boer is under contract with Ajax through the 2017 season and led his squad to their- and his fourth straight title in the Eredivisie last season. That feat is unmatched in Holland.

De Boer played with Holland’s national team and was capped 112 times.

Before deciding not to keep Sherwood, De Boer said the Spurs had talked to his current club Ajax about his contract. He said they checked to see about a possible successor with Ajax as had Liverpool prior to that.

De Boer insists he is happy at Ajax but was quick to say if a possible position came up or was proposed, he would consider it.

Regardless of what did or did not happen prior Sherwood being replaced is all a mute point, as Pochettino was hired from Southampton and De Boer continues to manage Holland’s top club Ajax.
