TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0 ASTON VILLA 0
MATCH REPORT

ComeOnSpurs.com 7th Feb 2010

Frustrated Spurs were denied victory by several excellent saves by Brad Friedel and a had a penalty claim turned down in a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa at White Hart Lane yesterday.

The draw meant that Spurs slipped out of the top four, as Liverpool beat Everton in the Merseyside derby to climb back up the table.

Both teams attacked from the outset, but it was Friedel who had the most to do during the opening 45 minutes. First the American, with the help of Richard Dunne, denied Peter Crouch after Luka Modric had him up by nutmeging Carlos Cuellar.

Tom Huddlestone also saw his powerful 25-yard strike parried by Friedel and as half time approached, the American pulled off his best save of the afternoon, flying across the goal to stop King from finishing after Crouch nudged a David Bentley free kick over to the defender. Defoe then sent the rebound sailing over the bar.

Villa also had chances to break the deadlock but Stewart Downing's cross could not quite find Richard Dunne and the Villains had a penalty shout of their own dismissed for a Michael Dawson handball.

James Milner came closest in the first half with a long range strike which Heurelho Gomes saved, before blocking Agbonlahor's rebound.

Emile Heskey left the field through injury and was replaced by John Carew who later wasted a good chance to give Villa the lead.

After the interval it was more of the same in an end to end game of football. Friedel denied Huddlestone again and Dunne stopped Bentley's long range strike.

Crouch saw his shot deflected to safety and later put his backheeled effort wide.

Into injury time, Jermain Defoe appeared to be tripped in the area by Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov, but referee Chris Foy waived play on.
