Rice vs Southern Miss Preview

In week 5 the Rice Owls head to M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to face the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Saturday. The Owls are 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS. The Golden Eagles are 2-2 SU and ATS.

Rice is coming off a loss 45-42 against conference opponent the Old Dominion Monarchs. Quarterback Driphus Jackson who has 550 passing yards and 4 touchdowns leads the offense this season. Jowan Davis leads the rushing game with 269 yards on 61 carries and a 4.4 yards per carry average. Zach Wright leads the wide receivers with 151 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Rice Owls defense is one of the worst in the country allowing 43.7 points per game and 527 yards per game through week 4.

Southern Miss is coming off a very close win 21-20 against Appalachian State last week. Quarterback Nick Mullens who has 895 passing yards and 3 touchdowns leads the offense this. Ito Smith leads the rushing game with 176 yards on 51 carries and a 3.5 yards per carry average. Markese Triplett leads the wide receivers with 146 yards on 14 receptions.

The Southern Miss defense has allowed 35.3 points per game and 486 yards per game through week 4.

Keys to Rice win

Rice will have to shut down quarterback Nick Mullens. In addition, their defense has to improve and play a great game.

Southern Miss will have to shut down running back Jowan Davis. In addition, Southern this will need Ito Smith to find the end zone this week.

Conclusion

This will be a very close game. However, the Rice Owls RB Jowan Davis will find the end zone this week and the Owls will improve to 1-3 and get their first win of the season.
