Arkansas State (1-1) at Miami (1-1) Preview


Miami Duke JohnsonCORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes are 1-1 coming off a 41-7 thrashing of the Florida A&M Rattlers and will host the Arkansas State Red Wolves. The Red Wolves dropped to 1-1 in a 34-19 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers last Saturday.

The Red Wolves are averaging 439 yards and 28 points per game on offense with dual-threat junior quarterback Fredi Knighten leading the team in passing and in rushing. Knighten has thrown for 385 yards and two scores while rushing for 158 yards and another score. Redshirt junior Tres Houston has been the hot target with 12 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown while junior Michael Gordon has 85 yards rushing and a score. Redshirt junior J.D. McKissic is a big play threat with 121 yards receiving on nine catches. Arkansas State is allowing 321.5 yards and 22 points per game defensively. The heart of the defense is banged up as senior linebacker Qushaun Lee is battling a rib injury but has 14 tackles and an interception on the year. The secondary is experienced and may be the strength of the unit.

The Hurricanes are averaging 330 yards and 27 points per game on offense featuring junior running back Duke Johnson who has 187 yards rushing and a score. True freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya is directing the offense and has struggled a bit throwing for 351 yards and three scores and four interceptions. Junior receiver Herb Waters has nine catches for 103 yards to lead all pass catchers. Miami’s defense has played well allowing 225 yards and 19 points per game having forced four fumbles and seven sacks. A pair of senior linebackers lead the unit with Denzel Perryman having 18 tackles, four for loss and Thurston Armbrister having three sacks.

Keys for Arkansas State Win

Knighten must have positive yardage impact and take care of the football. Establishing the run behind Knighten and Gordon will be essential. Front seven on defense is going to have to bottle up the run game.

Keys For Miami Win

Establish run game behind big offensive line with Johnson with an efficient game at QB from Kaaya. Perryman and Armbrister will have to be patient and disciplined in the run game.
