Champion’s Cup: Manchester United Beats Liverpool 3-1


man uIn Monday’s Guinness International Champion’s Cup Final, Manchester United achieved victory over Premier League rival, Liverpool, 3-1.

In the first game between Liverpool and Man U played outside of the clubs’ native England, Liverpool took an early lead in the 13th minute on a penalty kick taken by Steven Gerrard. Raheem Sterling was tackled by Phil Jones of United in the box, awarding Liverpool the free kick.

Liverpool would hold the 1-nil lead through the first half. In the 55th minute of competition, Manchester United poster boy Wayne Rooney scored the equalizer on a deep cross. Rooney tapped the ball on in on the right side of the net as he was being charged by Liverpool Keeper Simon Mignolet.

Man U took the lead less than a minute later as Juan Mata took a pass from outside the box and buried it in the back of the net in a beautiful display of striking.

In the 69th minute, Chicharito was removed from what may have been his final appearance with Man U in favor of Shinji Kagawa. The man who scored the go ahead goal, Juan Mata, was also subbed out in favor of Nani.

In the 88th minute, Lingard ensured a United victory as he scored the 3rd goal for the Old Trafford team.

This victory for Manchester United gave the club an always valuable victory over their longtime rivals Liverpool. Man U converted all 3 of their shots on goal, and gave new coach Louis van Gaal a 5-0 record as head coach of Man U. Wayne Rooney was named Guinness Man of the Match as United hoisted the cup trophy.
