College Football Preview: Washington State vs Nevada

Washington State footballThe (0-1) Washington State Cougars will travel to face the (1-0) Nevada Wolfpack. Last week Washington State lost in a shootout against Rutgers 41-38. During their loss last week the Cougars were able to put up impressive numbers with their passing game, but they were virtually non-existent in the rushing game. They will certainly be looking to get back into the win column this week. However, the Nevada Wolfpack were able to scrape by with a win in their first game against Southern Utah. Both teams will need to make adjustments for this game and both teams will feel that they can win the game.

–Keys for the Washington State Cougars:

  • Last week starting QB Connor Halliday absolutely lit it up. The Senior QB had 5 touchdowns through the air on 532 yards. But Connor also had plenty of opportunities, as he had 56 passing attempts. If the Cougars want to win this week they might want to think about balancing out their offense and giving their backs more of a chance, as they only had eight total rushing attempts.
  • Halliday was able to distribute his passes to 10 different receivers, which shows his ability to read the defense. If Halliday gets some help bring the defense into the box, he might have some chances for big plays.

–Keys for the Nevada Wolfpack:

  • Nevada allowed a lowly Southern Utah to score 19 points on them in the opening game. Although this isn’t necessarily considered a high number, it surely shouldn’t come against a team like Southern Utah. If the Wolfpack defense doesn’t step up, them they are doomed.
  • The balance of rushing to go with a decent passing game might have been the difference between them winning and the Cougars losing last week. Running back Don Jackson was able to scrape together a casual 110 yards last week, and their QB Cody Fajardo represents a duel threat under center with 68 yards rushing.

–Favorite/Odds: Washington State by 3.5 points

The Cougars will come into this game with most of the pressure on them, considering they were unable to secure a win in week one. However, the Cougars are the better team on paper with their versatile passing game. This game might come down to something unexpected, like a special teams play that might occur.
