Manchester United Routs LA Galaxy In Friendly

Man UManchester United began its tour of the United States a rather impressive debut under new coach Louis van Gaal, with a 7-0 rout of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy in front of 86,432 at the Rose Bowl. Danny Welbeck scored the opening goal for United and Wayne Rooney added two more before the 45 minutes were over.

Ashley Young and Reece James scored two second-half goals apiece as United completely out matched and out performed the Galaxy.

Under van Gaal United went to a 3-5-2 formation and the results were better than even he could have expected.

“This is so different to the Manchester United I watched and played for in the 1980s,” said a smiling Billy Garton, a former defender who is now a resident of San Diego. “Watching football used to be scary. Now, look at this.”

Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena spoke clearly to his teams efforts and talent after the match while praising United

“If [our players] aspire to be top-flight professionals, they see some of the top-flight professionals [with Manchester United] and the way they conduct themselves on the field and speed of play,” Arena said in his postgame news conference after the most lopsided defeat in club history. “Our young players and a number of our players still are not quality passers, and so tonight the passing by Man U was quick, it was crisp, it was of quality.

“We have too many players that are technically deficient right now, and that’s something they should learn. And also speed of thought, quickness in moving, winning tackles, running off the ball. All the simple things we frequently talk about, but unless you see it live and in real life, it’s something hard to have a picture of it. And they got a great picture of it tonight.”
