NFL Week 5: Ravens vs Browns Game Preview

on

Division rivals Cleveland browns and Baltimore will face off against each other in a bruising matchup of reborn offenses against difficult defenses.

Baltimore is the only team to hold each of its opponents scoreless in the second half this season, so the Browns will want to get on top early.

Cleveland’s defense has weapons that made it one of the best in the league until Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders figured them out in Week 4. They are anxious to get their moxie back.

This game will feature a rookie quarterback facing one of the oldest veterans in the NFL. Baker Mayfield led an offense that put 42 points on the board against the Raiders, just one week after igniting the Cleveland fan base with a come-from-behindvictory in a relief appearance against the Jets.

But his multiple turnovers kept the Raiders in the game until they eventually pulled out a wild 45-42 win. It is exactly what we look for in talented young passers not named Mahomes- lots of good stuff and enough bad stuff to remind us they are new to the pro game.

Joe Flacco is enjoying his retooled offense, with John Brown, Michael Crabtree, and Willie Snead providing quality targets downfield.

But they are not the only ones in the act. Flacco hit 11 different receivers last week, including 3 tight ends, 3 backs, and 5 wide receivers. If that is not a diverse enough offense for you, consider that 7 different players were credited with rushing yards.

Mixing it up will be vital to keeping Cleveland’s young, but talented defense from settling in. Running backs Alex Collins and Javorious Allen will try to imitate Marshawn Lynch’s successful pounding of the Browns mid-section, while the Browns’ Carlos Hyde and possibly, Nich Chubb, try to do the same to Baltimore.

Who will win the Browns-Ravens game?

For all the hype about the improved Cleveland Browns, they still own only one win. Fans can argue that with just a little luck, they could be 4-0, but that’s the point.

Cleveland still has a losing culture they are trying to overcome. Other than throwing the Jets a curveball by changing quarterbacks, the Browns continue to find ways to lose games. In a tough division and the parity-loving NFL, games are too close to survive many mistakes.

On the other hand, Baltimore has not yet put together a complete game, but they are still 3-1. The Ravens are determined to get into the playoffs in the retirement year of GM Ozzie Newsome. It could also be Joe Flacco’s last season in Baltimore as his heir apparent lurks on the sideline.

It all makes the Browns anything but a sure bet in any week, much less against a team of proven veterans. Final score: Ravens 24, Browns 16
